Figure 4D-15. Typical Position and Arrangements of Separate Signal Faces with Flashing Red Arrow for Permissive Only Mode and Protected/Permissive Mode Right Turns
This figure shows the typical position and arrangements of separate signal faces with flashing red arrow for permissive only mode and protected/permissive mode right turns. A legend shows a black arrow indicating the direction of travel on the roadway. A note states: "A flashing red arrow controlling a right-turn movement may be used only when an engineering study determines that each and every vehicle must successively come to a full stop before making a permissive turn."
The figure shows two types of examples. The first example is labeled "A – Typical Position." It shows three signals aligned horizontally on a horizontal pole over a vertical segment of three lanes of a roadway. An upward-pointing black arrow is shown in the left and middle lanes denoting the direction of travel as straight through, and a white right-turn arrow is shown marked in the right lane. The left signal is shown above the left lane as a vertical arrangement of circular red, circular yellow, and circular green signal indications. The middle signal is shown above the center lane as a vertical arrangement of circular red, circular yellow, and circular green signal indications. The right signal is shown above the right-turn lane as a vertical arrangement of right-turn steady red and flashing red arrow, right-turn yellow arrow, and right-turn green arrow signal indications. A note states that the green arrow "shall not be displayed when operated in the permissive only mode."
The second type of example is labeled "B – Typical Arrangements." It shows five arrangements:
- The first arrangement shows a vertical arrangement of three signal indications – right-turn steady red and flashing red arrow, right-turn yellow arrow, and right-turn green arrow. A note states that the green arrow "shall not be displayed when operated in the permissive only mode."
- The second arrangement shows a vertical arrangement of four signal indications in three vertical positions – right-turn steady red arrow to the left of a right-turn flashing red arrow centered over a right-turn yellow arrow, and right-turn green arrow. A note states that the green arrow "shall not be displayed when operated in the permissive only mode."
- The third arrangement shows a vertical arrangement of four signal indications in three vertical positions – circular red to the left of a right-turn flashing red arrow centered over a right-turn yellow arrow and a right-turn green arrow. A note indicates that this face "would be used if it is intended that a right turn on red after stop be permitted; a RIGHT TURN SIGNAL (R10-10R) sign shall be used with this face if the red indication is sometimes displayed when the signal faces for the adjacent through lane(s) are not displaying a red indication and the red indication in the right-turn signal face is not visibility limited." A note also states that the green arrow "shall not be displayed when operated in the permissive only mode."
- The fourth arrangement shows a horizontal arrangement of three signal indications – right-turn steady red and flashing red arrow, right-turn yellow arrow, and right-turn green arrow. A note states that the green arrow "shall not be displayed when operated in the permissive only mode."
- The fifth arrangement shows a horizontal arrangement of four signal faces – circular red, right-turn flashing red arrow, right-turn yellow arrow, and right-turn green arrow. A note states that the green arrow "shall not be displayed when operated in the permissive only mode." A second note indicates that this face "would be used if it is intended that a right turn on red after stop be permitted; a RIGHT TURN SIGNAL (R10-10R) sign shall be used with this face if the red indication is sometimes displayed when the signal faces for the adjacent through lane(s) are not displaying a red indication and the red indication in the right-turn signal face is not visibility limited.
