2009 Edition Part 6 Figure 6F-7. Channelizing Devices
Figure 6F-7. Channelizing Devices
This figure illustrates 11 examples of eight types of channelizing devices: drums, tubular markers, vertical panels, cones, type 1 barricades, type 2 barricades, type 3 barricades, and direction indicator barricades.
The illustration labeled "Drum" shows a vertically-oriented tubular shaped device, with a base slightly wider than at the top. The height is shown as a dimension of 36 inches MIN. The dimension across the top is shown as 18 inches MIN. A yellow circle on a white rectangular base is shown above the top-left corner of the drum and is accompanied by the notation "facing traffic" with the note "Warning lights (optional)." The body of the drum is shown with alternating orange and white horizontal stripes; the width of each stripe is shown as a dimension of 4 to 6 inches.
The illustration labeled "Tubular Markers" shows two different markers:
- The first tubular marker is labeled "Night and/or Freeway High-Speed Roadway (equal to or above 45 mph)." It is shown as a narrow vertical tube on a base. The dimension from the bottom of the base to the top of the tube is shown as 28 inches MIN. The base and the tube are shown as orange in color. Two parallel horizontal white areas labeled as "Retroreflective Bands" are shown covering 3 inch high sections of the tube at two specific locations on the tube. The top of the topmost of the two white bands is shown as 2 inches below the top of the tube, and the space between the two white bands is shown as 2 to 6 inches.
- The second tubular marker is labeled "Day and Low-Speed Roadway (less than or equal to 40 mph)." It is shown as a short narrow vertical tube on a base. The dimension from the bottom of the base to the top of the tube is shown as 18 inches MIN. The base and the tube are shown as orange in color. One horizontal white area labeled as "Retroreflective Band" is shown covering a 3 inch high section of the tube. The top of the white band is shown as 2 inches below the top of the tube.
The illustration labeled "Vertical Panel" is shown as a vertical horizontal rectangular panel mounted on a pole protruding vertically out of a flat base. The rectangular panel is shown with a height shown as a dimension of 24 inches MIN. and a width shown as a dimension of 8 to 12 inches. The dimension from the bottom of the base to the bottom of the rectangular panel is shown as 12 inches MAX., and the dimension from the bottom of the base to the top of the rectangular panel is shown as 36 inches MIN. The rectangular panel is shown covered with alternating white and orange diagonal stripes running from top left toward bottom right at a 45-degree angle. The width of each stripe is shown as a dimension of 4 or 6 inches. A yellow circle on a white rectangular base is shown above the top-left corner of the panel with the note "Warning lights (optional)."
Three illustrations labeled "Cones" show three different types of cones:
- The first two cones are labeled "Night and/or Freeway, High-Speed Roadway (equal to or above 45 mph)." The first cone is shown as a flared tubular shape with a base wider than the tip. The dimension from the bottom of the base to the top of the cone is shown as "More than 36 inches." The cone and its base are shown as orange in color. Three parallel horizontal white areas labeled as "Retroreflective Bands" are shown covering sections of the cone at three specific locations on the cone. The space between the two topmost white bands is shown as 4 to 6 inches.
- The second cone is shown as a flared tubular shape with a base much wider than the tip. The dimension from the bottom of the base to the top of the cone is shown as 28 inches MIN. to 36 inches MAX. The cone and its base are shown as orange in color. Two parallel horizontal white areas labeled as "Retroreflective Bands" are shown covering sections of the cone at two specific locations on the cone. The top of the topmost of the two white bands is shown as 3 to 4 inches below the top of the cone. The height of the topmost white band is shown as 6 inches, and the space between the two white bands is shown as 2 inches. The height of the lower white band is shown as 4 inches.
- The third cone is labeled "Day and Low-Speed Roadway (less than or equal to 40 mph)." It is shown as a short flared tubular shape, with a base much wider than the tip and is shown as orange in color. The dimension from the bottom of the base to the top of the cone is shown as 18 inches MIN.
The illustration labeled "Type 1 Barricade" has a note that states: "Rail stripe widths shall be 6 inches, except that 4-inch wide stripes may be used if rail lengths are less than 36 inches. The sides of barricades facing traffic shall have retroreflective rail faces." The barricade is shown as one horizontal rectangular rail with a width shown as a dimension of 24 inches MIN. and a height shown as a dimension of 8 to 12 inches. The distance from the top of the panel (rail) to the ground surface is shown as a dimension of 36 inches MIN. The rail is shown covered with alternating white and orange diagonal stripes that run from top right to bottom left at a 45-degree angle. A yellow circle on a white rectangular base is shown above the top-left corner of the rail with the note "Warning lights (optional)."
The illustration labeled "Type 2 Barricade" has a note that states: "Rail stripe widths shall be 6 inches, except that 4-inch wide stripes may be used if rail lengths are less than 36 inches. The sides of barricades facing traffic shall have retroreflective rail faces." The barricade is shown as composed of two horizontal rectangular rails parallel to each other and one directly above the other. Each rail is shown with a width shown as a dimension of 24 inches MIN. and a height shown as a dimension of 8 to 12 inches. The distance from the top of the upper panel (rail) to the ground surface is shown as a dimension of 36 inches MIN. The rail is shown covered with alternating white and orange diagonal stripes that run from top right to bottom left at a 45-degree angle. A yellow circle on a white rectangular base is shown above the top-left corner of the rail with the note "Warning lights (optional)."
The illustration labeled "Type 3 Barricade" has a note that states: "Rail stripe widths shall be 6 inches, except that 4-inch wide stripes may be used if rail lengths are less than 36 inches. The sides of barricades facing traffic shall have retroreflective rail faces." The barricade is shown composed of three horizontal rectangular rails parallel to each other and one directly above the other. Each rail is shown with a width shown as a dimension of 4 ft MIN. and a height shown as a dimension of 8 to 12 inches. The distance from the top of the topmost panel to the ground surface is shown as a dimension of 5 ft MIN. The rail is shown covered with alternating white and orange diagonal stripes that run from top right to bottom left at a 45-degree angle. A yellow circle on a white rectangular base is shown above the top-left corner of the rail with the note "Warning lights (optional)."
The illustration labeled "Direction Indicator Barricade" has a note that states: "Rail stripe widths shall be 6 inches, except that 4-inch wide stripes may be used if rail lengths are less than 36 inches. The sides of barricades facing traffic shall have retroreflective rail faces." The barricade is shown as composed of a horizontal rectangular sign with a large black horizontal left-pointing arrow and black border on an orange background mounted above a horizontal rectangular-shaped panel with alternating diagonal orange and white stripes. The sign with the horizontal arrow is shown with a width of 24 inches and a height of 12 inches. The striped panel is shown covered with alternating white and orange diagonal stripes that run from top right to bottom left at a 45-degree angle. It is shown with a width of 24 inches and height of 8 inches. The distance from the top of the sign with the horizontal arrow to the ground surface is shown as a dimension of 36 inches MIN. A yellow circle on a white rectangular base is shown above the top-left corner of the rail with the note "Warning lights (optional)."
