Figure 6H-19. Detour for One Travel Direction (TA-19)
This figure illustrates an example of a detour for one travel direction. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 19. A note states "See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."
This figure shows two vertical two-lane roadways intersecting four horizontal two-lane roadways. The vertical roadway on the right is denoted as Main Street. All of the roadways are shown as two lanes with broken yellow lines between the intersections. Black arrows show the direction of traffic flow. They are shown proceeding from the bottom right and going north along Main Street. In the southbound direction on the vertical roadway on the left, "L" shaped arrows are shown at the intersections along the detour showing where traffic following the detour must turn. Traffic is shown flowing from the top right south along Main Street with a right turn to the topmost cross street, then west along the cross street and then west to a turn south on the vertical roadway on the left. The traffic flow is shown continuing south on the leftmost vertical roadway to the bottom cross street and then turning from south to east and continuing until Main Street and turning from east to south on Main Street.
At the bottom of the figure and to the right of the right lane of the vertical roadway on the right, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. One-quarter up from the bottom of the figure, a horizontal roadway is shown intersecting the vertical roadway. Beyond this intersection, a vertical rectangular black and white diagonally striped box, denoting a work space, is shown in the southbound lane. It is shown continuing northward and crossing two horizontal roadways before ending at the third horizontal roadway. Orange and white diagonally striped Type III barricades are shown at the south end of the work space, the north end, and on the east and west sides at the two intersections the work space is shown crossing. On the barricades on the east side of the work space, horizontal rectangular black on orange DETOUR arrow signs are shown mounted above horizontal rectangular black on white ONE WAY arrow signs. On the cross streets to the east of the work space, signs facing the westbound traffic are shown on the two middle cross streets. At both of these streets' intersections with Main Street, right-facing DETOUR arrow signs are shown above a ONE WAY arrow sign, and a Road Work Ahead sign is shown in advance of the intersections. At the top cross street, a square white sign with a black border is shown is shown facing westbound traffic at Main Street. This sign shows a vertical black arrow bent at a 90-degree angle pointing to the left. A red circle and diagonal slash running from the upper left to the lower right are shown superimposed on the arrow, denoting no left turn.
At the end of the work space, a Type III barricade is shown with a sign assembly on it that faces the southbound traffic. The signs are shown as a horizontal rectangular white sign with a black border and the words "Main St CLOSED" in black above a right-facing DETOUR arrow sign. On the southbound lane of Main Street, three diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders are shown facing the southbound traffic in advance of the first horizontal street. One is shown as a Road Work Ahead sign, the next is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD CLOSED AHEAD" in black, and the third is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "DETOUR AHEAD" in black.
At the top of the figure, a vertical rectangular orange sign assembly is shown on the east side of the leftmost vertical roadway that faces westbound traffic. It shows the words "MAIN ST" in black on one panel and the word "DETOUR" and a left-pointing arrow in black on a panel directly below. Another rectangular orange sign assembly is shown on the west side of the intersection facing the eastbound traffic and with the words "MAIN ST" in black on one panel, the word "SOUTH" in black directly below on another panel, and the word "DETOUR" and a right-pointing arrow in black on a panel directly below that. On the topmost cross street facing eastbound traffic, a square white No Right Turn symbol sign is shown at the intersection with Main Street. At the next two cross streets, Type III barricades with horizontal rectangular white signs with black borders mounted on them are shown placed across the right lanes of these two horizontal streets. They are shown facing eastbound traffic with the words "ROAD CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC" in black. On these same two horizontal streets, directly in front of the work space on Main Street, barricades with horizontal rectangular white signs are shown that face eastbound traffic and have the words "ROAD CLOSED" in black.
On the leftmost vertical roadway, a sign assembly with the words "MAIN ST" in black mounted above a DETOUR sign with a left-pointing arrow is shown mounted at the bottom cross street facing southbound traffic. On the bottom cross street facing eastbound traffic, another Main St Detour sign is shown with a right-pointing arrow at the intersection with Main Street. At the bottom of the figure, a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border is shown with the words "END DETOUR" in black is shown at a dimensioned distance of 100 ft south of the southbound lane of Main Street.
