2009 Edition Part 6 Figure 6H-39. Median Crossover on a Freeway (TA-39)
Figure 6H-39. Median Crossover on a Freeway (TA-39)
This figure illustrates an example of a median crossover on a freeway. A legend under the figure states that this is "Typical Application 39." A note states: "See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in the figure."
This figure shows a vertical four-lane divided highway with two lanes in each direction and a median between them. Downward-pointing black arrows in the two left lanes and upward-pointing arrows in the two right lanes denote the direction of travel. Lanes going in the same direction are shown separated from each other by a broken white line. A shoulder is shown to the right of each right lane and to the left of each left lane. The right shoulders are shown separated from the right lanes by a solid white line, and the left shoulder are shown separated from the left lanes by a solid yellow line.
At the bottom of the figure and outside both the left and right shoulders of the northbound lanes, two black inverted "Ts" are shown denoting signs. The signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "ROAD WORK XX MILE" in black. Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance C, another set of signs is shown outside both the left and right shoulders. These signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "RIGHT LANE CLOSED XX MILE" in black. Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance B, another set of signs is shown outside both the left and right shoulders. These signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "RIGHT LANE CLOSED XX FT" in black. Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance B, another set of signs is shown outside both the left and right shoulders. These signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders. They show a thick, vertical straight line on the left; a thick, vertical line on the right that angles toward the left half way up; and a thin, short vertical dotted line between them that is the length of the vertical section of the line on the right, denoting a lane ends. Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance A, a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a yellow directional arrow pointing to the left is shown in the right-hand shoulder. Just in advance of this sign, a series of orange squares denoting channelizing devices is shown tapering from the outside edge of the shoulder to the solid white line separating the shoulder from the right lane, labeled a shoulder taper.
Beyond the shoulder taper, a solid temporary white edge line is shown tapering from the solid white line between the right lane and the shoulder to the left to the broken white lines between the left and right lanes. This taper is shown as a dimensioned distance L. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this temporary line. The solid white line and the channelizing devices are shown continuing along the vertical line between the left and right lanes for a dimensioned distance 1/2 L. To the right of this vertical line, a sign is shown. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border and an upward-pointing arrow that slants diagonally up and to the left and then straightens to a vertical direction, denoting a reverse curve. It is shown above a square orange plaque labeled optional with a black border and the words "XX MPH" in black. The vertical solid white line between the left and right lanes is shown tapering to the left for a dimensioned distance L. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this line. Also at this point, the left lane is shown beginning to curve to the left, with channelizing devices shown along the solid yellow line on the left side of the lane.
The original two northbound lanes are shown continuing straight ahead as a single travel lane with a solid white line on both the left and right sides. Where the original left and right lanes divide, a white half circle with black crosshatching denoting a crash cushion is shown in the middle of the lane and labeled optional. It is shown in advance of a horizontal black line denoting a sign assembly, composed of a horizontal rectangular white sign with a black border and the words "ROAD CLOSED" in black above a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border and a large horizontal black arrow pointing to the left. This sign assembly is shown directly in front of a horizontal rectangle with diagonal orange and white stripes, denoting a Type III barricade, shown placed across the entire left shoulder, travel lane, and right shoulder. Beyond the barricade, a vertical rectangle with diagonal black and white stripes, denoting a work space, is shown in the travel lane. Beyond the work space, two Type III barricades are shown, one extending across the entire left shoulder and most of the travel lane and another across most of the travel lane and the entire right shoulder.
At the point where the original left and right lanes divide, the left lane is shown curving to the left. A solid temporary yellow edge line is shown on the left side with channelizing devices along it, and a solid temporary white edge line is shown on the right side. This lane is shown curving to the left, crossing the median, and curving into the southbound left lane. At the point where it enters the southbound lane, a series of channelizing devices are shown on the solid yellow line on the left side of the southbound left lane for a dimensioned distance of 2S ft (S = speed in mph) (see Note 6).
At the point where the crossover is shown clearing the median, a series of four signs is shown on the median. The first sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and a downward-pointing black arrow to the left of an upward-pointing black arrow, denoting two-way traffic. The next is shown as a vertical rectangular white sign with a black border and the words "DO NOT PASS" in black. Beyond this sign, another two-way traffic symbol sign is shown and a reverse curve symbol sign with the arrow curving to the right.
Just beyond these signs, the crossover lane is shown beginning to curve to the right and leave the southbound lane. At this point, a sign is shown on the left side of the crossover lane. It is shown as a vertical rectangular white sign with a black border. At the top left corner of the sign, a depiction of the plan view of the nose of a traffic island is shown. An upward-pointing arrow is shown on the sign, curving to depict movement to the right of the nose of the island. This sign is shown in advance of a horizontal black line denoting a sign, shown as a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border and a large horizontal black arrow pointing to the right. This sign is shown directly in front of a Type III barricade shown placed across the entire southbound left lane. Beyond the barricade in the southbound left lane, a sign is shown. The sign is shown as a square white sign with a red circle with the words "DO NOT" and "ENTER" in white above and below a thick horizontal white line. It is shown in advance of a crash cushion labeled optional in the middle of the southbound left lane. Beyond this point, the crossover lane is shown curving to the right, crossing over the median, and joining the northbound lanes. Beyond the crossover lane and to the right of the right shoulder, a sign is shown. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border and the words "END ROAD WORK" in black.
At the top of the figure, a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a yellow directional arrow pointing to the left is shown straddling the median and the left shoulder of the southbound left lane. At this point, a solid temporary yellow edge line is shown tapering from the solid yellow line between the shoulder and the left lane to the broken white lines between the left and right southbound lanes. This taper is shown as a dimensioned distance L. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this temporary line. The channelizing devices are shown continuing into the left shoulder of the southbound left lane to form a diagonal shoulder taper that is shown ending at the median beyond the arrow panel. Channelizing devices also are shown continuing along the temporary yellow line to the right of the crash cushion and the Type III barricade and ending at the outside curve of the crossover lane.
