Figure 6H-32. Half Road Closure on Multi-lane, High-Speed Highway (TA-32)

This figure illustrates an example of a half road closure on a multilane, high-speed highway. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 32. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."

This figure shows a vertical four-lane highway with two lanes of traffic in each direction. Downward-pointing black arrows in the two left lanes and upward-pointing arrows in the two right lanes denote the direction of traffic. The opposing lanes are shown separated by a solid double yellow line. A shoulder is shown to the right of each right travel lane. The shoulders are shown separated from the travel lanes by a solid white line. The two lanes in each direction are shown separated from each other by a broken white line.

At the bottom of the figure and to the right of the shoulder of the right, northbound lane, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. Beyond the sign, at a dimensioned distance C, another sign is shown to the right of the shoulder. It is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "RIGHT LANE CLOSED XX MILES" in black or its metric alternate "XX km." Beyond this sign, at a dimensioned distance B, another sign is shown to the right of the shoulder. It is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "RIGHT LANE CLOSED XX FT" in black or its metric alternate "XX m." This sign is in advance of another sign shown to the right of the shoulder at a dimensioned distance B. It shows a thick, vertical straight line on the left; a thick, vertical line on the right that angles toward the left half way up; and a thin, short vertical dotted line between them that is the length of the vertical section of the line on the right, denoting a lane ends. Adjacent to this sign, a series of orange squares, denoting channelizing devices, is shown beginning at the far right edge of the right shoulder and tapering to the left to the white line separating the shoulder from the right lane. This shoulder taper is shown at a dimensioned distance A. A note with a leader pointing to the taper states "shoulder taper (see Note 2)."

At the end of the shoulder taper, a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a yellow directional arrow pointing to the left is shown across the right shoulder. At this point, a series of channelizing devices is shown along the solid double yellow line and continuing past a horizontal rectangle with diagonal black and white stripes, denoting a work space. The work space is shown in both northbound lanes. Beyond the arrow panel, the channelizing devices are shown continuing to taper to the left to the broken white lane for a dimensioned distance L. Just to the left of the devices for the length of the taper, a solid temporary white edge line is shown. At this point, a sign assembly is shown in the right travel lane. It is composed of a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and an upward-pointing arrow that slants diagonally up and to the left and then straightens to a vertical direction, denoting a reverse curve, shown above a square orange plaque with a black border and the words "XX MPH" in black or its metric alternate "XX km/h." The "XX" in the metric version is within a black circle. At the point where this sign is shown, channelizing devices are shown stopping the taper to the left and continuing straight for a dimensioned distance ½ L MIN. Just to the left of the devices, the temporary white edge line is shown continuing for the same distance. Then the channelizing devices are shown beginning to taper to the left again to the center of the roadway for a dimensioned distance ½ L MIN. The devices then are shown continuing straight along the center of the roadway to the left of the work space. The temporary white edge line is shown just to the left of the devices as they taper and continue straight. A solid temporary double yellow line is also shown tapering to the left to the center of the southbound lanes, then running vertically to a point slightly beyond the work space. From this point, a solid temporary single yellow line is shown tapering back to the middle of the roadway at a dimensioned distance ½ L MIN. Channelizing devices are shown directly in front of and behind the work space. To the left of the work space, another reverse curve symbol sign is shown, this time with the curve to the right. The temporary white edge line then is shown tapering back to the right to the white line separating the right lane from the shoulder. Beyond this taper, a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border is shown to the right of the shoulder. It shows the words "END ROAD WORK" in black.

At the top of the figure to the right of the shoulder of the southbound lane, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown. Beyond the sign, at a dimensioned distance C, a Left Lane Closed XX Miles sign is shown to the right of the shoulder with its metric alternate "XX km." Beyond this sign, at a dimensioned distance B, a Left Lane Closed XX FT sign is shown to the right of the shoulder with its metric alternate "XX m." This sign is shown in advance of a lane ends sign shown to the right of the shoulder at a dimensioned distance B. The sign is a lane ends symbol sign showing the left line tapering to the right. Adjacent to this sign, a series of channelizing devices is shown along the solid double yellow line and continuing straight for a dimensioned distance A. The devices then are shown beginning to taper to the right along a temporary single yellow line to the broken white line for a dimensioned distance L. At this point, an arrow panel is shown in the middle of the left-hand southbound lane, with the arrow pointing toward the southbound right lane. At this point, channelizing devices are shown continuing along a solid single yellow line in the center of the roadway through an undimensioned buffer space labeled optional and then tapering to the right for a dimensioned distance ½ L MIN. and joining the temporary yellow line, forming a median. To the right of the arrow panel, the channelizing devices are shown continuing straight along the broken white line through an undimensioned buffer space labeled optional, joining the devices from the original solid double yellow line, continuing past the work space in the northbound lane, tapering to the left again to the solid double yellow line, and then continuing straight along the line until they are opposite the arrow panel in the northbound lane. Beyond the end of the channelizing devices, an End Road Work sign is shown to the right of the shoulder.
