Figure 2E-37. Examples of Multi-lane Crossroad Signing for Partial Cloverleaf Interchange
This figure shows examples of multi-lane crossroad signing for a partial cloverleaf interchange.
The figure shows segments of two multi-lane highways, an unnamed highway running vertically and I-57 running horizontally. The interchange between the two is shown as a partial cloverleaf to the left of the vertical highway. At the top right of the figure, a black capital letter "N" is shown superimposed on a left-pointing horizontal black arrow, denoting the compass direction.
A series of signs and sign assemblies are shown for one direction of travel along the vertical highway from the bottom to the top of the figure and along the horizontal roadway from right to left. Except as otherwise noted, all signs and sign assemblies are horizontal rectangular green signs with white borders and lettering. They are shown to the right of the highway.
The figure shows six sets of sign assemblies on the vertical highway:
- At the bottom of the figure, a pair of signs are shown separated by the word "OR." The left sign is shown as a red and blue Interstate shield for I-57. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "JCT" in white letters and a white border on a blue background. The right sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign with the word "JUNCTION" on the top line and the Interstate shield for I-57 on the bottom line.
- The second sign is shown farther north. It shows the Interstate shield for I-57 to the left of the word "SOUTH" on the top line, the word "Effingham" on the middle line, and the words "NEXT LEFT" on the bottom line.
- The third sign is shown just beyond the second sign with the same I-57 shield on the top line to the left of the word "NORTH" on the top line, the word "Champaign" on the middle line, and the words "SECOND LEFT" on the bottom line.
- Just prior to the first left exit ramp, the fourth sign is shown separated from a sign assembly by the word "OR." The fourth sign is shown with an upward-pointing arrow, the word "NORTH," and an Interstate shield for I-57 on the top line and the word "Champaign" on the next line above a horizontal white dividing line. Under the line, a left-pointing horizontal arrow is shown to the left of the word "SOUTH" to the left of the I-57 shield on the top line, and the word "Effingham" is shown on the bottom line. The sign assembly to the right shows the word "OVERHEAD" above it. Two signs are shown in a horizontal array superimposed on two horizontal black lines between two short vertical black lines. The left sign shows a left-pointing horizontal arrow to the left of the word "SOUTH" to the left of an Interstate shield for I-57 on the top line and the word "Effingham" on the bottom line. The right sign shows a short upward-pointing vertical arrow to the left of the word "NORTH" to the left of an Interstate shield for I-57 on the top line and the word "Champaign" on the bottom line.
- The fifth sign is shown midway between the first left exit ramp and the point where the vertical highway crosses over I-57. It is shown as a red and blue Interstate shield for I-57. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "NORTH" in white letters and a white border on a blue background. Below it, a plaque is shown with a right-angle arrow pointing up and to the left.
- Near the top of the figure, the sixth sign is shown just prior to the second left exit ramp. A horizontal arrow pointing to the left is shown to the left of an Interstate shield for I-57 to the left of the word "NORTH" on the top line. The word "Champaign" is shown on the bottom line.
The figure shows two signs on the horizontal highway, I-57:
- Just prior to the point where the vertical highway crosses over I-57, the first left exit and entrance ramps are shown. To the right of the entrance ramp and facing westbound traffic, a horizontal rectangular green sign is shown with a white border and the words "FREEWAY ENTRANCE" in white on two lines.
- Just beyond the point where the vertical highway crosses over I-57, the second left exit and entrance ramps are shown. To the right of the entrance ramp and facing westbound traffic, another green Freeway Entrance sign is shown.
