Figure 2B-9. Examples of Applications of Jughandle Regulatory and Guide Signing (Sheet 2 of 3)

This figure illustrates three examples of applications of jughandle regulatory and guide signing on three sheets: turns made prior to the intersection, a traditional jughandle, and turns made beyond the intersection.

Sheet 2 illustrates two examples of a traditional jughandle. The larger figure shows a segment of a vertical four-lane divided highway intersecting a horizontal roadway to the west of the highway, labeled "Levitt Pkwy."Black arrows on the vertical roadway indicate that the direction of travel in the two left lanes is southbound and in the two right lanes, it is northbound. Broken white lines are shown separating the lanes on the vertical highway. A solid white line is shown extending across the two northbound lanes in advance of the intersection with the horizontal roadway. Black inverted Ts denote signs.

Near the bottom of the figure, a deceleration lane tapers to the right of the northbound lanes, leading to a right exit ramp. The deceleration lane runs parallel to the right lane and is separated from it by a dotted white line that changes to a solid white line. Along the top two-thirds of the exit lane, the solid white line splits in two to form a long V-shaped island with forward-pointing white chevron markings on the pavement. The exit ramp then widens to two lanes divided by a broken white line and curves to the right and then to the left to form a semicircle that becomes horizontal and intersects the vertical highway opposite the horizontal roadway.

At the bottom of the figure, a sign is shown to the right of the northbound lanes. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend with the words "Levitt Pkwy Willingboro Rancocas NEXT RIGHT" on four lines.

At the point where the taper into the deceleration lane begins, a sign is shown to the right of the deceleration lane. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular while sign with a black border and legend with the words "ALL TURNS FROM RIGHT LANE" on three lines.

Beyond these signs, at the far edge of the island, a sign assembly is shown between the northbound lanes and the exit ramp. It is composed of a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend with the words "Levitt Pkwy Willingboro Rancocas" on three lines to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right. It is mounted above a horizontal rectangular while plaque with a black border and legend with the words "U and LEFT TURNS" on two lines to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right.

Farther along the exit ramp where it begins to curve to the left, a sign is shown to the left of the exit ramp. It is shown as a white sign with a black border and legend with the words "U TURN FROM LEFT LANE" on three lines.

After the exit ramp curves to the left and in advance of the intersection with the vertical highway, a sign assembly is shown to the right of the exit ramp. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend showing a vertical arrow pointing up that is to the left of the words "Levitt Pkwy Willingboro Rancocas" on three lines.

At the intersection with the vertical highway, a white line is shown extending across both lanes of the exit ramp.

The smaller inset figure is almost the same as the larger figure, with the exception that there is no horizontal roadway. The exit ramp curves to the right and then to the left to form a semicircle that becomes horizontal and intersects the vertical highway as a T-shaped intersection. A broken white line is shown extending from the solid white line between the two lanes of the exit ramp and curving south to the join the broken white line between the two southbound lanes of the vertical highway. The sign at the start of the taper into the deceleration lane in the larger figure is replaced with a sign with the words "U TURN FROM RIGHT LANE." The sign at the edge of the island in the larger figure is replaced with a sign with the words "U TURN" to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right.
