Standard Signs included in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD—Phased Releases of PDF, EPS, and SVG files

The new 2024 Edition of the Standard Highway Signs (SHS) publication is currently in progress and will be released in Phases. Layouts for new signs in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD will be released here first, with periodic updates as additional sign details are finalized culminating in the publication of the 2024 Edition of SHS. While the Federal Highway Administration completes the publication of the design details for the signs added in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD, the phased releases of new sign designs should be used along with the old designs contained in the 2004 Edition of SHS and the 2012 Supplement, until such time that the full publication is released. Once the 2024 Edition of SHS is released, the 2004 Edition of SHS and the 2012 Supplement will become obsolete.

Links will be posted for each release of standard highway sign design details:

  1. Individual pages, within a single combined PDF document, of the forthcoming SHS publication with detailed dimensions and sign or plaque legend and background color information. Please note, all dimensions shown are in inches.
  2. Individual corresponding pages of the forthcoming SHS publication’s Appendices, as separate combined PDF documents, which include detailed text descriptions of the detailed sign dimensions. If multiple sign types (e.g., regulatory and school) are included in the same release, the corresponding appendix files will be posted as separate files.
  3. Full-size, vector-based, undimensioned sign layouts in PDF, EPS, and SVG formats. Layouts are to actual scale for each standard sign size indicated and can be transmitted directly to an electronic vinyl cutter for fabrication purposes and mounting onto a sign substrate. Please note that sign layouts do not necessarily scale directly from one size to the next, so be certain to use the correct file for the specified sign size.

The EPS, PDF, and SVG files for each sign included in a release are contained in a sub-folder specific to each sign designation within a single ZIP file for the release. All of the available sizes specified in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD for a particular standard sign will be included.

Additional files for signs not included in the current releases are still being developed.

Development Status of Standard Sign Designs and Fabrication Details – 11th Edition of the MUTCD

The following status tables include the sign designations, signs, notes, and release status for the standard signs included in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD. Within the notes column, short descriptions (e.g., New Sign, New Size Added, Revised Size, Redesignated and Revised, Redesignated, and Revised) indicate those signs which are newly adopted, include new or revised sizes, are redesignated with additional revisions or are simply redesignated, or are revised in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD and 2024 SHS. For reference purposes see the 2004 SHS or the 2012 Supplement for sign details not yet available in the 2024 SHS releases. Once the 2024 SHS details have been issued for a particular sign the details included in the 2004 SHS and 2012 Supplement are superseded and considered obsolete. Several standard signs were discontinued with the adoption of the 11th Edition of the MUTCD and are now obsolete. For State adoption purposes the 2024 SHS details will need to be reflected.
